There is a hidden idea of sex with young girls within our culture. Like most of our philosophy, it is hidden within cultural pillars. It wears a cloak of invisibility making it hard to point out, yet it is so present it is impossible to ignore.
In Obour’s hit song ‘Konkotibaa’ the idea was at its clearest… almost losing its cloak of invisibility. He clearly stated in the song that he was interested in an underage girl and he is not ashamed of it. Ha… so perhaps it is not so normal then.
Scary as it may sound, Obour won more awards with that song and album than with any other of his works. Why is that? Is it because we support the idea of having sexual intercourse with underage girls? You might say no; but I will let Obour go and look into the older generation. The almighty Amakye Dede did something about Akwadaa Wesoa (a very very or should I say extremely young girl) and how fascinated (for want of a milder term) he was by her body.
The list of songs that carries the idea is scary long. So long, I will not be able to give you a complete list. It is obvious that Obour didn't start the idea and that in fact he had inherited it from our older folks who really should know better. Maybe they do know better and maybe I am making a fuss about nothing.
It must have been in the late 90s when parliament passed a law allowing sexual intercourse with sixteen year olds. After that so many things have happened including “so called” honorable men engaging in intercourse (not of the verbal kind of course) with underage sister-in-laws and turning to culture for refuge after the public outcry. Nobody did anything. I will let Lamptey Mills pass but the question I have been asking myself is this: how many of these government officials will be willing to give up their 16 year olds for marriage? I have heard of no such thing. If we agree that 16 is not a good enough age for a woman to become a mother, why pass a law that allows it?
As far as the music goes pedophilia is under heavy promotion by way of the Akwadaa Wesoa philosophy. Who can blame these guys; they are only playing back what they have learnt from their fathers. The victims are our young girls who invariably do not know what is going at all. In some parts of the country (and that includes Accra) it appears to be perfectly normal to have sex with 12 year olds whiles everyone else looks on like nothing strange is happening.
I accept that things like that can happen but I am not sure that we should allow it to become the norm. What happened to all that talk about protecting the girl child?
I should mention that Obour is now the president of Musiga (our musicians union). Is there a chance that he could talk his members out of promoting the idea? I doubt that very much… well not after the idea had won him so many awards. Seriously who in their right minds awards a song that promotes pedophilia? Funny I have not heard what Nana Oye Lithur have to say about this – that should be interesting.
Musical Pedophilia has more than one dimension. Whiles I will not explore all the dimensions in one article, permit me to bore you with just one more dimension. Walk around Accra and you will hear little children singing songs with triple X rated content most of which literally defines women as sex objects. If that’s not musical pedophilia, tell me what it is then.
